Less than a week after the UK laid landmark legislation to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the country’s largest airport (also the largest single source of UK emissions) unveiled its plans for a third runway. “This whole absurd situation would almost be funny if we weren’t facing a climate emergency,” said John Sauven, executive director of Greenpeace UK.

Free bus travel will be given to under-19s next year after SNP ministers extended Scotland’s overdraft to fund a budget deal with the Greens. Figures published yesterday showed that commuters are turning their backs on buses as overall use of public transport declines. There were 517 million trips on public transport in 2018-19 compared with 525 million the previous year. The number of kilometres travelled by car rose by 7.7 per cent from 33.8 billion to 36.4 billion between 2013-14 and 2018-19.
