The Scottish Government confirmed it was aware of the situation at Hunterston. “We understand that the ONR’s assessment is on-going and that formal permission must be provided before the reactor is restarted,” said a spokesperson. “It is essential that the strictest environmental and safety requirements are met for all existing nuclear power stations. The ONR must ensure the nuclear industry controls its hazards effectively and maintains the highest nuclear safety and security standards.”

The news from the ‘Sunday Herald’ that new cracks have been found in the graphite blocks around the Hunterston B nuclear reactor is of real concern to the Nuclear Free Local Authorities (NFLA) Scotland Forum. NFLA calls for exacting safety checks to ensure that public safety is not put at risk by the operation of the 42 year old nuclear reactor.
