Fracking is set to begin in Lancashire within weeks, it has been announced, as the Government is accused of “trampling over democracy” by approving a second well. Energy and clean growth minister Claire Perry announced that Cuadrilla will be allowed to frack a second well at Preston New Road near Blackpool days after Parliament went into recess for the party conference season. It comes as up to 20 backbench Conservative MPs are said to be ready to rebel against Government proposals to fast-track fracking applications by removing the need to full planning approval for test drilling. Green MP Caroline Lucas said the Government had “trampled over local democracy” at Preston New Road.

A PIONEERING partnership between gas platforms and windfarms could see more power generated and a cut in production costs, according to the industry regulator. The Oil & Gas Authority (OGA) said a new concept called gas-to-wire (GTW) would involve gas being regenerated into electricity offshore and transmitted back to shore using spare capacity in subsea cabling used by windfarms.
