George Milburn stood on the picket lines 35 years ago to fight Margaret Thatcher’s campaign to break the unions. Now, at the age of 86, the former coal face worker is entering the fray once more. This time, however, he’s fighting for the mine to close, along with climate insurgents from Extinction Rebellion. Locals from the villages that were built on the back of the mining industry are joining forces with climate activists to oppose proposals by the Banks Group to expand the Bradley open-cast mine near Leadgate, Co Durham, where Mr Milburn lives.
