The Belgian nuclear safety authority (AFCN) announced Friday that the deterioration of concrete affecting four of its reactors is a risk level 1 on an official scale, and that these anomalies increase the risk of accidents. This issue “calls into question the availability of emergency systems, which increases the risks in the event of an external accident,” the authority said in a statement. The FANC first observed a deterioration of the concrete in the ceiling of the bunkerized building adjacent to its Doel 3 reactor (1,006 MW), in October of last year.

Could the FANC, a Belgian nuclear policeman, not have been able to detect earlier the concrete problems of the bunkers which house emergency systems, which concern three of the shutdown reactors, as well as Doel 3, which was able to detect restart after repair?
