I listened incredulously to the wide coverage this morning by the media on the dire warnings to the climate change aware, that reliance on renewables was not possible. Balancing the intermittency and uncertainty of wind and solar would need some 40,000 50MW battery storage facilities at a cost of a trillion pounds sterling. Clearly impossible – and so the only answer is gas, or new nuclear; and as we know gas is still very definitely a CO2 emitting fossil fuel. So we are invited to conclude that if we wish to be carbon free, new nuclear is the only viable answer – isn’t it? The Renewables riposte was that some French island has copied the proposal we made to the Jersey Government that we could make it the world’s first green energy island with a lagoon and electric cars. But this practical, commercially viable (cheaper than nuclear!) solution has been proposed and rejected as “Fake News” by the Government Department supposed to be leading the development of UK energy strategy. Now we know why, it totally undermines their “new nuclear or nothing” strategy. Tidal Range energy is a world leading UK energy resource and is being developed with the help of the Welsh Government and local authorities by a UK company to build a South Wales industry with a UK supply chain, from which all the benefits flow to the UK.
